INUSpheresis®: A Deep Detox for Chronic Illness
What to do when a green juice and an enema aren’t enough to make you feel better
Spring is here, which means people everywhere are throwing open windows, clearing out closets, and talking about “detoxing” like it’s a verb that applies equally to pantries and personalities. But if you’re someone with chronic illness—especially the kind that involves autoimmune symptoms or toxic overload—or if you’ve hit a wall with your attempts at feeling better, or you react badly to everything and aren’t quite ready for dry fasting—INUSpheresis® might be just the thing to rock your world. It certainly rocked mine.
I was introduced to INUSpheresis® two years ago while I was in Switzerland, and have since returned for two additional treatments. At the time of my first visit, I was drowning in mold toxicity and other environmental infiltrators including arsenic and a byproduct of gasoline that had contaminated my home water supply without my knowing. After treatment, it was like night and day: my depression lifted, my energy came back, and my brain felt crystal clear. It was as if a fog had lifted. I was thrilled.
I’d be having a fourth INUSpheresis® treatment right now, but I can’t. Having just completed two back-to-back 9-day dry fasts (with one more to go in May), I’m under strict orders to let my body recalibrate and reorganize for two full months before I take so much as a Tylenol. So, while I rest and hydrate, I figured I’d use this time to tell you about this life-changing treatment—and why I think it belongs on your radar.
What is INUSpheresis®?
INUSpheresis® is a high-tech blood filtration treatment that gently removes environmental toxins, inflammatory molecules. heavy metals, immune system agitators, and microplastics. In short, you can think of it as a super-specific, medical-grade Brita filter for your blood—one that gives your immune system a break, lowers chronic inflammation, and helps your body actually respond to treatments again.
How Does It Work?
Your blood is drawn, separated into plasma and cellular components, passed through a filter that removes the garbage, and then returned to your body—revived, reorganized, and ready to stop overreacting.
Ideally, this is done through two veins—one in each arm. But if your veins have taken early retirement (hi, hello, yes that’s me), the procedure can be done through a central vein in your groin. It’s not painful, but it is humbling. (Nothing says “I’m committed to healing” like showing up for a blood-cleansing bikini-line catheter.)
WARNING: You can’t move during treatment, especially if they’re using your arms—so prepare to meditate, nap, or spend two to three hours reflecting on your most questionable life choices. Bring Rescue Remedy. Skip the espresso. Practice stillness. You don’t want to risk puncturing a vein with the needle in your arm by itching a phantom scratch behind your ear. Trust me on this.
THE ELUATE (AKA: WHAT’S LURKING INSIDE YOU)
Here’s where it things get real. At the end of the procedure, your toxins are collected in a separate bag called the eluate—a golden /orange soup of what was clogging up your system. I’ve even seen it go dark red, which means there’s a lot of inflammation inside you! A sample is taken from the bag and sent to a lab for testing so you can later learn exactly what was floating around in your bloodstream and tissues. This can include (but isn’t limited to):
Heavy metals like lead, aluminum, arsenic and mercury
Pesticides and solvents
Oxidized fats and lipoproteins
Plasticizers and microplastics
Mold toxins, biotoxins, pathogens, and even tattoo ink!
(That weird rash? That unexplained fatigue? That crushing brain fog? And you thought it could be fixed with an extra cup of coffee?)
WHO IS IT FOR?
INUSpheresis® is particularly helpful for people with:
Autoimmune disease (Hashimoto’s, lupus, Sjogren’s, MCAS, etc.)
Chronic infections (Lyme, EBV, long COVID)
Mold toxicity and chemical sensitivity
Rheumatism and chronic pain
Fatigue and CFS/ME
Cognitive issues, anxiety, and depression
Skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis)
Neurodegenerative illness (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, ALS)
Cardiovascular disease and elevated cholesterol
Anyone with “mystery symptoms” no one can seem to explain
In other words: if you’ve seen 12 doctors, tried 65 supplements, and still feel like a potato with anxiety, this might be worth exploring.
IS INUSpheresis®SAFE?
Yes. INUSpheresis® has been safely performed thousands of times in Europe and Asia. Mild side effects may include fatigue, bruising, water retention, or low blood pressure. The main caution is for people with a heparin allergy, since a small amount is used to prevent clotting.
OTHER ADVANTAGES OF INUSPHERESIS®
INUSpheresis® is as gentle as it is effective. There’s no loss of essential electrolytes or blood plasma proteins. Only altered and pathological protein structures are filtered out.
DIFFERENCE FROM DIALYSIS
INUSpheresis® differs fundamentally from dialysis, which is a proven method for removing urinary substances in patients with impaired kidney function. In contrast, INUSpheresis® is used to eliminate misdirected autoimmune antibodies, inflammatory messengers and environmental toxins, strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammatory processes. While dialysis is primarily used for patients with kidney problems, INUSpheresis® can help a broader group of patients struggling with autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammation, environmental stresses and long-COVID.
THE DOWNSIDES
INUSpheresis® is not covered by insurance. And it isn’t cheap. Two infusions will run you about 5k. It isn’t available, yet, in the US, so you also have to pay for your plane ticket and hotel room. That said, I’ve just learned that a New York-based practice will soon have an INUSpheresis® machine—so this incredible treatment is finally making its way stateside.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Do I think everyone needs INUSpheresis®? Truthfully… yes. In a world where chronic illness is on the rise and the answers are often vague or unhelpful, this is one treatment that made a visible, lasting difference in my mood, my energy, and my health. It gave me hope when I’d almost given up—and in my book, that’s worth sharing. Of course, I did turn to dry fasting because INUSpheresis® isn’t financially sustainable for me or geographically desirable while I’m living in the United States. Nevertheless, it is a treatment that can change the equation for people who have few other options and some cash to burn.
